Finished cream rectangular crochet storage basket made from the original pattern photograph

Finished size and gauge

  • Length: 30 cm / 11.8 in
  • Width: 25 cm / 9.8 in
  • Height: 14 cm / 5.5 in
Gauge: 10 half-treble crochet stitches × 7 rows = 10 cm / 4 in. The sides are crocheted to about 28 cm, then folded in half to create the final 14 cm double wall.

Materials

  • 3 × 100 g balls of cream aran-weight yarn
  • 10 mm crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch marker for the start of each round
  • Measuring tape

Yarn note: The source specifies aran-weight yarn. Because the 10 mm hook is large for many aran yarns, make a gauge swatch first. Holding two strands together can create a firmer basket if one strand feels too soft.

Step 1 of 6

Check gauge and chain 31

Make a small half-treble swatch. When the gauge is correct, chain 31 for the basket base.

Complete written basket pattern

Base

  1. Chain 31.
  2. Work 1 htr in the second chain from the hook and 1 htr in every remaining chain: 30 stitches. Turn.
  3. Work 1 htr in every stitch across. Turn.
  4. Repeat the previous row until the rectangular base measures 25 cm / 9.8 in.

Sides — work in rounds

  1. Begin on the first short side. Work 18 dc evenly across the row ends.
  2. Work 30 dc along the first long edge.
  3. Work 18 dc evenly along the second short side.
  4. Work 30 dc along the remaining long edge: 96 stitches total.
  5. Place a marker at the start of the round. Continue working dc around, keeping 96 stitches, until the sides measure approximately 28 cm / 11 in or twice your desired finished height.
  6. Fasten off, leaving a long sewing tail.

Folded double-wall finish

  1. Fold the side fabric inward so the top edge meets the line where the base htr rows and first side dc round meet.
  2. Use the long tail and a tapestry needle to sew the folded edge securely around the base of the wall.
  3. Shape the corners by hand and block gently if needed.

Count and shape checks

  • The base starts with 30 htr stitches and stays 30 stitches wide.
  • The first side round is 18 + 30 + 18 + 30 = 96 stitches.
  • Space the 18 short-side stitches evenly so the fabric does not gather or flare.
  • Keep 96 stitches in every side round unless intentionally resizing.
  • Measure the side wall before folding: 28 cm produces a finished wall close to 14 cm.
  • If the basket collapses, use firmer yarn, hold two strands together, or reduce the hook size while maintaining the required dimensions.

How to resize the basket

Change the starting chain to set the base length, then crochet until the base reaches the desired width. When working the first side round, place one stitch in every stitch along the chain edges and distribute stitches evenly along the row-end edges. Record the total and keep that count for every side round.

For a different finished height, crochet the side wall to twice that height before folding it inward.

Questions

Why is the side wall crocheted twice as tall?

It is folded inward and sewn at the base of the wall, creating a thicker double layer that helps the basket stand upright.

Do I join each round?

The source says to continue working in rounds but does not specify joined or continuous rounds. Continuous rounds with a marker create a smooth finish; joined rounds also work if the join is kept straight.

Can I use another yarn weight?

Yes, but the finished dimensions and firmness will change. Swatch first and adjust the hook, starting chain, and number of rows to match the target measurements.

Why are UK and US terms different?

UK double crochet is US single crochet, while UK half treble is US half double crochet. The stitch structure is the same; only the names differ.
