Materials

  • DK or light worsted yarn in two strongly contrasting colors
  • 4 mm crochet hook, or size needed to match gauge
  • Stitch marker, yarn needle, scissors and measuring tape
  • Pom-pom or removable pom-pom attachment

Gauge: 18 stitches and 18 rounds measure 10 cm / 4 in when worked in the round.

Construction

The beanie is worked as a spiral cylinder from the crown edge downward. After reaching the required height, close the foundation edge with a yarn needle and attach the pom-pom.

Odd-numbered chart rounds use color A; even-numbered chart rounds use color B. Only one color is active per round.

Fit note: choose the size by actual head circumference rather than age. Matching gauge is essential.

Abbreviations and mosaic method

R round · st stitch · ch chain · sl st slip stitch · sc single crochet · dc double crochet · BLO back loop only · FLO front loop only.

In the chart, an empty square means one BLO single crochet. A filled square means one double crochet worked into the unused front loop two rounds below. Read every chart round from right to left. Repeat chart columns 1–12 around; columns 13–16 only show how the repeat continues.

Step 1 of 8

Check gauge and choose a size

Work a small cylinder in the planned yarn and measure 18 stitches and 18 rounds over 10 cm / 4 in.

Choose the size from the wearer’s actual head circumference. Change hook size if the gauge is not correct.

Foundation and setup

With color A, chain 76 (79, 82, 84, 86, 88). Join with a slip stitch to form a ring without twisting.

R1: single crochet around: 76 (79, 82, 84, 86, 88). Change to color B on the final yarn-over of the last stitch. Place a marker in the first stitch and move it up every round. Do not join the spiral rounds.

R2: BLO single crochet around in color B. Change to color A on the final yarn-over.

Diamond chart rounds

From R3, begin each chart round at column 11 (9, 2, 1, 12, 11) for sizes 1–2 years (3–4 years, 5–8 years, 9–12 years, teen, adult).

Work the current chart row around, repeating columns 1–12 and stopping after the last stitch for the chosen size. Alternate colors every round. After chart row 14, return to chart row 3. Continue until the beanie reaches the listed height. Finish on a color-A round.

Finish the lower edge

Slip stitch into the first stitch, or make an invisible finish: cut and pull the yarn through, thread the tail, pass under both loops of the first stitch, then return the needle into the center of the final stitch. Weave in all ends.

Close the crown

With color A and a yarn needle, sew through the foundation round around the entire opening, spacing each pass about 2 cm apart. Pull firmly to close, then secure with several extra stitches. Attach the pom-pom securely.

Shape checks

  • The work should form a straight cylinder, not flare outward.
  • Every round retains the selected foundation count.
  • The chart repeat advances without adding transition stitches.
  • The fabric should measure the listed circumference after several rounds.
  • The final round is worked in color A before finishing.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the chart not a full repeat at the round join?

Several sizes are not multiples of 12. The size-specific starting column centers the partial repeat at the join while preserving the correct fit.

Can I use a different yarn?

Yes, but match the stated gauge and use a yarn that produces a firm, flexible fabric.

Is this suitable for beginners?

You should be comfortable with working in a spiral, changing colors, BLO single crochet and dropped mosaic double crochet.
