Materials

  • Your choice of yarn in three colors: flower center, petals, and square border
  • 4.5 mm crochet hook, or the hook recommended for your yarn
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors and optional blocking pins

The sample size is approximately 4.5–5 in (11–12.5 cm). Yarn weight, hook size, and tension will change the final measurement.

Before you start

  • Work in joined rounds and turn only if your tension benefits from it.
  • The starting chain counts as the first double crochet unless noted.
  • Join each round neatly with a slip stitch.
  • Choose Version A for a denser center or Version B for a more open center.
Color plan: use one color for rounds 1–2, a petal color for rounds 3–4, and a background color for rounds 5–6.

Round 1 of 6

Round 1 · Flower center

Make a magic ring. Ch 1, work 7 sc into the ring, pull the ring closed, and join to the first sc. 8 stitches.

Round 2 · Choose A or B

A: Ch 3, dc in the same stitch, ch 1. Work (2 dc, ch 1) in each remaining stitch; join.

B: Ch 5 (counts as dc, ch 2). Work (dc, ch 2) in each remaining stitch; join.

Round 3 · Daisy petals

Join the petal color in any chain space. Ch 3, work 3 dc in the same space, ch 1. Work (4 dc, ch 1) in every chain space around; join. You should have 8 petal groups.

Round 4 · Square the flower

Join in a ch-1 space. Ch 3 and add 5 dc in that space, then 6 dc in the next ch-1 space and ch 1 for the corner. Repeat around so each side is formed by two 6-dc groups separated from the next side by a ch-1 corner.

Round 5 · Build the border

Join the background color in a corner. Work (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in the corner. Across each side, use ch-2 spaces anchored with sc between the petal groups; repeat the same corner in every corner space.

Round 6 · Final granny round

In each corner work (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc). Across each side, work four 3-dc groups into the ch-2 spaces. Join, fasten off, and weave in the ends.

Round 4: Join in any ch-1 sp. Ch 3, 5 dc in same sp; 6 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1. Continue around, placing 6 dc in each ch-1 sp and a ch-1 after every second group to mark four corners. Join. [8 six-dc groups, 4 corners]
Round 5: Join background color in any corner. Ch 3, dc, ch 1, 2 dc in corner. Across the side, *ch 2, sc in the gap between adjacent 6-dc groups* as positioned; continue with ch-2 spaces to the next corner. Work (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in each corner and repeat around. Join.
Round 6: Sl st to the corner space. Ch 3, dc, ch 1, 2 dc in the corner. Work 3 dc in each of the four ch-2 spaces across the side. *(2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next corner; 3 dc in each of four ch-2 spaces; rep from * around. Join and fasten off.
Round 4 placement check: you are converting eight petal spaces into four sides. Treat each pair of 6-dc groups as one side, then place a ch-1 corner before starting the next pair.

Shape checks

  • After round 2: eight evenly spaced sections.
  • After round 3: eight matching petals with no cupping.
  • After round 4: four clear corners and four equal sides.
  • After round 6: four 3-dc groups across every side.

Finishing

  1. Fasten off and weave each tail through several stitches on the wrong side.
  2. Lightly mist or wet-block to the desired measurement.
  3. Pin all four corners square without overstretching the flower.
  4. Let the motif dry completely before joining it to other squares.

Ways to use this motif

Repeat the square for a baby blanket, cushion front, tote bag, table runner, scarf, or cardigan panel. For a clean join, block every motif to the same measurement and use the same final-round yarn color throughout the project.

Daisy granny square FAQ

What yarn is best for a daisy granny square?

Smooth cotton or acrylic yarn makes the flower definition easy to see. Use any yarn you enjoy, but keep all colors in the same weight.

Why is my square cupping?

Your tension may be too tight, especially in the chain spaces. Try a slightly larger hook or make the corner chains more relaxed.

Can I make the square larger?

Yes. Add standard granny rounds, working 3-dc groups in every side space and (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in each corner.

How many colors do I need?

Three colors give the clearest daisy effect, but two colors also work: one for the flower and one for the square border.
